Submit to Love

Who gets to be an artist?

This is a question that runs through the work of Submit to Love Studios like a live wire - posed as a genuine, ongoing enquiry into talent, access, recognition and what happens when those things are reconsidered. The answer is anyone, and everyone.

Submit to Love is based at Headway East London, a charity supporting people affected by brain injury. The studio is home to more than forty artists - all self-taught, all working collectively in an open studio environment that runs on music, common experience, and a shared belief in what the act of making can do. Their work has been shown at the Barbican, the Southbank Centre, Autograph Gallery and Rich Mix. It has featured in collaborations with French Connection and Everpress, challenging institutions to reckon with who they call an artist.

Exhibition

Peaks of Imperfection presents the work of nineteen artists, spanning painting, ceramics, sculpture, embroidery, drawing, stitchwork, poetry and music. The exhibition's title comes from a painting of the same name by the exhibiting Submit to Love Artist, Graham Naylor. This isn't an exhibition to be understood through biography or diagnosis, but to be looked at and sat with on its own terms.

The exhibition open to the public between Friday 24 - Wednesday 29 April, 10am-5pm daily incl. weekends. No booking required, and free to enter.
