Project Overview

History Carved in Stone

One Carrington - a prestigious £1 billion mixed-use regeneration project in the heart of Mayfair - occupies a 1.3-acre site, developed by Motcomb Estates and designed by leading architecture practice Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. The development transforms the former NCP car park site and surrounding buildings into a world-class destination comprising 28 luxury residential apartments, a 70,000 sq ft business-focused members' club by Robin Birley, and premium office space.

Curated by Zoë Allen of Artistic Statements, our team designed and delivered an elegant, timeless artwork, carved into Portland Stone and installed at the development's main entrance, celebrating the rich historical context of the area through beautifully illustrated narratives spanning over a millennium.

The Brief

Elegance in the Public Realm

The project marks the first pedestrian connection between Shepherd Market and Piccadilly, opening up previously hidden historic streets to public access. Located in one of London's most exclusive neighbourhoods, the site sits within the Mayfair Conservation Area and is surrounded by 20-40 listed buildings representing various architectural periods. This complex context, combined with the project's completion under a Section 106 agreement with Westminster Council, demanded exceptionally thoughtful integration with the history and heritage that underpins the site.

The challenge was to create an artwork that would serve as both a welcoming threshold and a meaningful contribution to the public realm. The piece needed to feel inherently beautiful while respecting the surrounding architecture, blend seamlessly with neighbouring listed buildings and modern developments, and navigate the rigorous parameters of Section 106 planning regulations whilst meeting Westminster Council's exacting standards for public art in this prime central London location.

"Acrylicize has delivered a crafted piece that works harmoniously within the constrained and challenging site parameters, and successfully celebrates this new route through the heart of Mayfair."

Our Approach

The Story of Mayfair

Our team responded with a concept rooted in narrative and place-making. What began as a chronological timeline evolved into something more engaging - a curated collection of lesser-known facts and surprising historical moments, hidden histories and fascinating details about places people walk past every day without realising their significance. Each illustrated panel reveals a different layer of the area's heritage, from the River Tyburn (750 AD) and the May Fair that gave the district its name, to 57 Green Street where The Beatles shared a home, and the ancient Egyptian statue Sekhmet that has guarded Bond Street since 1917.

Working in close partnership with Artistic Statements, AHMM, Motcomb Estates, and Westminster Council, we designed a sophisticated stone carving installation, in Portland Stone - the same material cladding the entire development. Matching these materials was crucial, ensuring the artwork felt tailored and integral to the architecture rather than an bolted-on addition to the newly connected thoroughfare. The artwork elevates the entrance sequence whilst contributing meaningfully to Mayfair's cultural landscape, serving as a lasting testament to the area's extraordinary history.
